The Final Leg

The journey to Shree Surya Devi is not an easy one. The school sits in a remote mountain village, around 20km from the nearest road. When the weather turns, the already challenging route becomes impossible for vehicles, leaving only one way forward: on foot.

And that's exactly how the final delivery began.

With 188 uniforms packed and ready to go, the team set off up the mountain. Boxes of freshly prepared school uniform were carried along narrow paths, through the hills and towards the school, climbing all the way to an altitude of 1,930 metres.

It is a very different kind of delivery.

No vans. No loading bays. No easy access.

Just a long walk, a lot of determination, and 188 uniforms that had a very long way to go.

Up The Mountain

As the journey continued, every step took the team further from the road and closer to the school.

For us, it's easy to think of a school uniform as a relatively simple thing. A shirt. A pair of trousers. A jumper. A pair of shoes.

But for the children of Shree Surya Devi, receiving a new uniform means something much bigger.

As we discovered when we first visited the school, many families rely on subsistence farming and simply cannot afford to buy new uniforms for their children. Some pupils had previously arrived at school in worn, ill-fitting clothes or without shoes at all.

That can have a real impact on how children feel about coming to school.

So, as those 188 uniforms made their way up the mountain, we knew exactly where they were going — and exactly who was waiting for them.

After hours of walking, the uniforms finally arrived at Shree Surya Devi School.

And then came the best part.

The boxes were opened, the uniforms were handed out, and the pupils got to put on their new school clothes for the first time.

For us, this was the moment that made the entire journey worthwhile.

The school that we wrote about in 2024, with 175 pupils and a growing need for affordable school uniforms, was now seeing every one of its pupils receive a brand-new uniform.

Not hand-me-downs.

Not worn-out replacements.

A uniform of their own.

And, importantly, a pair of shoes to go with it.

More Than Just A Uniform

Providing a uniform might seem like a small thing. But at Shree Surya Devi, it can make a meaningful difference.

A uniform helps children feel part of their school community. It gives them something to be proud of. And when every child is dressed equally, the financial circumstances of their family become a little less visible.

More importantly, it removes one more barrier between a child and their education.

Our original goal was simple: make sure every child at Shree Surya Devi has what they need to come to school feeling confident and ready to learn.

With this final delivery of 188 uniforms, we've now provided 257 school uniforms to pupils at Shree Surya Devi School through Cap for a Cause.

What started with a cap has taken us 20km up a mountain — and, more importantly, into the lives of hundreds of children.

The Journey Continues

We're incredibly proud to have completed the uniform programme, but this isn't the end of our journey with Shree Surya Devi.

The school has already come a long way. From the challenges following the 2015 earthquake to the construction of its new earthquake-resilient building, it has continued to grow and provide opportunities for children in this remote community.

Now, we're looking at what comes next.

Because if a school can climb this far, we think its ambitions should go even higher.
